Last Week in Unreal: C++23 Becomes the Default and the Editor’s AI Agent Gets Bolted Down (July 13 to 19, 2026)

Epic is back from summer shutdown: 789 commits on ue6-main, 48 on ue5-main. Engine modules now compile as C++23 by default, module circular dependencies are fully gone, and a dedicated audit is making the editor’s in-editor AI agent stop crashing the editor when it gets fed bad input. Plus a 5.x stabilization sidebar for studios shipping on 5.8 today.

Last Week in Unreal: Three People, One Bot, and the Last Wall Comes Down (July 6 to 12, 2026)

Epic is on its annual two-week summer shutdown. ue6-main ran 64 commits, ue5-main ran zero, and the entire week was written by three humans and a build bot. One of those humans drove the editor’s circular-dependency allowlist from 13 entries to zero, and shipped a live status page for the UBA build cache on the way out.

Last Week in Unreal: The Editor Walls Keep Falling Through the July 4 Lull (June 29 to July 5, 2026)

US holiday week, so ue6-main ran quiet at 75 commits and ue5-main was silent. One engineer kept the UE6 editor-modularization campaign moving: UnrealEd lost its links to MaterialEditor, the Interactive Tools Framework, and AssetTools, a runtime-to-editor layering violation in Landscape got fixed, and the refactor quietly audited itself for bugs along the way.

Last Week in Unreal: UE6 Starts Tearing Down the Editor Walls (June 22 to 28, 2026)

Week two on ue6-main: 880 commits. Epic is bolting an AI agent into the editor while simultaneously tearing out the circular dependencies and VM layers that would make that hard. The loud story (a first-party agentic toolset framework) sits behind binary blobs we can’t read. The quiet story (Engine no longer links UnrealEd, a Verse VM fuzzer, AutoRTFM hardening) is fully visible in source. Plus the 5.8.1 sidebar for studios shipping today.

Last Week in Unreal: UE6 Development Has Begun (June 15 to 21, 2026)

UE 5.8 shipped as the last planned major UE5 release and mainline development moved to ue6-main: 878 commits versus ue5-main’s 113. Week one of UE6 reads as incremental re-platforming of the UE5 codebase, with a thin but real new layer: Verse becoming the gameplay model, a first-party in-editor MCP server, the AutoRTFM transactional toolchain, and Mass ECS gaining replication over Iris.

Epic Dropped Lore. The Good, the Bad, and the Hidden Costs.

Epic open-sourced Lore, its game version control system, at State of Unreal. Here’s a straight read: what’s genuinely good, what’s not ready, the costs nobody mentions, and whether your studio should actually move off Perforce or Diversion.

Last Week in Unreal: June 8 to 14, 2026

770 commits on ue5-main. Epic is assembling a first-party Model Context Protocol layer inside the editor across about 30 commits. UnrealBuildTool gained a full per-warning control surface in BuildConfiguration.xml, and UBA absorbed an AB-BA lock-ordering deadlock fix in its CAS store.
